Skills Boot Camp : Exeter College
Learn New Skills & Barter
In 2021 I had the idea to create a bartering platform. The aim was for people to get more out of their disposable income, develop their skills, and make new connections. In September 2023 the website went live. In November 2023 I realised “oh I have some skills, but they aren’t very comprehensive”.
So in January 2024 I figured i’d better learn new skills, and increase what I have to offer.
After looking around, I found a free Skills Boot Camp at Exeter College. The Government scheme provides a range of training in industries across the UK that currently have shortfall in the work force. As I eyed the list of skills, Data Analysts , Web Developer, Apple App Developer, I came across “Entry into the Construction Industry…”
Skills Are Value
Barter is the exchange of fundamental skills and goods directly between individuals without the using money. Where practical, essential skills and items such as growing food, building, and crafts are traded based on their value to the individuals concerned. Having skills to offer are value in themselves.
Like many others I have spent most of my career in desk-bound work. And over the years I’ve been compelled to increase my skills value, get off the screen and DO something. Something practical, to become more skilled and dexterous, and wished I could do my own DIY. Here was my chance “Entry into the construction Industry”! A 12 week programme , providing the basics in carpentry bricklaying, painting and decorating and plastering, starting January 2024.
What mature mum needing to learn new skills could say NO?
I’ve now competed 4 weeks of the course. My cohort and I have now learned; how to build a rudimentary brick wall, a stud wall, hatch lining, the basics of carpentry, joinery and brick laying. And the careers team are already on the case with helping us find work.
I had an idea to swap my skills on barter’d, do a few light jobs, or if I really liked it set up a side-hustle as a ‘lady handy person’. I never saw myself 8.00am on a construction site, but I’m beginning to realise you never know where you might end up if you get some skills.
